RICHMOND, Va. -- If Tony Stewart is unhappy with his Joe Gibbs Racing team's decision to switch from Chevrolet to Toyota next season, the two-time NASCAR champion isn't letting it show.

Stewart said all the right things when the long-rumored deal was announced Wednesday by team president J.D. Gibbs and hasn't backtracked this weekend.
"I've always trusted Joe and J.D.," Stewart said. "If I didn't believe in that, I wouldn't be in negotiations extending my contract."

Stewart's long relationship with Chevrolet on the U.S. Auto Club and World of Outlaws teams he owns will continue.

The Columbus, Ind., native offered no timetable on when his extension might be finalized.

"(The media) doesn't have to know everything we do," he said. "When we've got something to tell you, we'll let you know."

Yates makes U-turn

Almost immediately after announcing a partnership agreement with Champ Car's Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing in July at Indianapolis, Robert Yates began having second thoughts.

What he came to realize is that, at age 64, he doesn't have the energy to oversee a rebuilding effort for a team that has won 57 Cup races but has struggled of late.

So Friday, he announced his decision to turn over the team to his son, Doug, effective at the end of the season.

"The goal of the partnership was to build a team to contend for the championship," Yates said.

"The more I thought about it, the more I realized instead this was the perfect opportunity for me to pass the torch to the next generation."

Doug Yates said the deal with Newman-Haas-Lanigan has been dissolved and announced Travis Kvapil as the replacement for retiring Ricky Rudd in the team's No. 88 car next season.

Hoosiers looking for work

David Stremme is about to join fellow Hoosier Tony Raines in the unemployment line.

South Bend's Stremme found out this week he won't be back in the No. 40 Ganassi Racing car next year after Coors Light opted not to renew its sponsorship.

Earlier this week, LaPorte's Raines was informed he would be replaced next year by J.J. Yeley at Hall of Fame Racing.
