Chevrolet has put nine of their cars in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Chase to the Championship. Of the remaining 12 cars, two are Fords and one a Dodge. Each of the manufacturer's 2007 wins come from Chase drivers with the exception of one win apiece from the three lone race-winning drivers outside the Chase, the 3Ms: Mears, McMurray and Montoya.
Jimmie Johnson's win in Saturday night's Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway clinched the fourth consecutive manufacturers' championship for Chevrolet, its 31st since 1952. How fitting they should clinch the title at their title-sponsored race.
Nine drivers have contributed to the 19 Chevy victories this season: Jimmie Johnson (6), Jeff Gordon (4), Tony Stewart (3), Kevin Harvick (1), Denny Hamlin (1), Kyle Busch (1), Jeff Burton (1), Casey Mears (1) and Martin Truex, Jr. (1).
Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper:
"This has been a dream season for Chevrolet."
Will it be their last? Probably not despite three of those drivers going away next year. Chevy might just have to work harder for it. Then again, Toyota has their work cut out for them. They haven't come close to finding victory lane yet--not even a top 5. Toyota's highest finish thus far is 6th, brought to them by Dave Blaney, who is the leading Toyota driver in the 33rd points position. (36th in owner points for those of you following the Blaniac Challenge.)
Ford and Dodge are the ones that need to be concerned about Toyota. If Joe Gibbs Racing really does help pull Toyota up to the next level, they're the ones that stand to be left in the dust.
Meanwhile ... Chevy is still like a rock.
