Joe Lax, crew chief for the No. 36 Bill Davis Racing Toyota driven by Jeremy Mayfield in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, has been suspended after rule violations found on his car last weekend at California Speedway.
NASCAR announced today that Lax will be suspended from his role until September 19, meaning he will have to miss the next two races at Richmond and Loudon, and will then be on probation from his return and until the end of the year.
The No. 36 car was initially found to be underweight during Friday inspection before qualifying at Fontana last week, but later passed that check. However NASCAR officials discovered that a piece of lead had been put in a water container to make the car heavier.
In addition to Lax's suspension he has also been fined US $25,000 and car owner Gail Davis has been deducted 25 points in the owner standings while also Jeremy Mayfield has lost 25 points in the driver standings.
Also due to rule violations at Fontana, Steve Lane, crew chief for the No. 40 Chip Ganassi Racing car of David Stremme, was fined US $2,500 because his team's scorer left the scoring area prior to the end of the race.
In the Busch Series, Scott Zipadelli, crew chief of the No. 47 Ford driven by Kelly Bires and Stewart Cooper, crew chief of the No. 37 Ford driven by Bobby East, were fined for technical infractions found on their cars in the opening day inspection at Fontana.
