After the announcement at Richmond International Raceway that Hendrick Motorsports had renewed its partnership agreement with Chevrolet, Dale Earnhardt Jr. met with reporters and talked about the implications of missing the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup and his move to Hendrick next season. Here are his comments:
Q: Dale, does missing the Chase in your last year at Dale Earnhardt Inc. leave an empty feeling inside you:
A: Nah, I think when you are put in positions like this, you have an opportunity to add value to your integrity or take it away. What I try show my guys is the harder we try, even in the situations that are sometimes pointless, if we continue to try really hard, it just shows the integrity we have.
Q: Dale, can you find any positives in missing the Chase:
A: There are positives in everything. I find the positives in everything, at least. It's not so much the fox in the grapes deal, but it is more like there is a lot of pressure that won't be on me, I guess, for the last 10 races. ... I will be able to look a little more into the future and preparing for next year and doing the switch with the teams and all, moving over.
Q: Dale, what is your most disappointing aspect of missing the Chase:
A: I really feel like we should have made it. I really, really feel like we should have. I didn't think it would even be close. I'm really disappointed that we weren't able to realize our potential.
Q: Dale, how much progress have you made as a racecar driver:
A: I've been running harder each year. I don't understand why or how that is or what the reason is for that. But it seems like each year, there is more and more of a racecar driver that comes out. Either I am just getting a little bit better each year, or I am just understanding that there is a lot more depth, not so much in ability, but in sheer willpower and determination, you know. I think that's growing as I mature. I'm getting better as I get older and more mature, getting more immersed in what I'm actually trying to accomplish, what my goals are in racing.
Q: How do you feel about crew chief Tony Eury Jr.'s joining you at Hendrick Motorsports:
I'm real happy about that. I think he deserves it. He deserves to really enjoy what he does. He is really, really good at it, and he's such a good person. I want him to just really enjoy the rest of his career, and the possibilities there are for him to establish himself as one of the better crew chiefs that has come into this sport. I feel like he is going to enjoy working over at Rick's. I really do. I think he is going to fit right in. They're already calling him little Robert Gee over there (a reference to Eury Jr.'s grandfather Robert Gee who also worked for Hendrick).
